The opiate epidemic is an American problem

According to an article in The Guardian, we have seen a decline in our life expectancy for the first time since 1993. In America. In 2017. With modern technology and medical advancements.

Our young adults are dying of addictive behaviors all around us. Some of these behaviors are more socially acceptable, while others are straight up not cool.  Diabetes, liver disease, heart disease, dementia – those people are so unfortunate. Depression, anxiety, addiction, suicide – those people are total failures. But could all of these diseases be related?

I think Americans in particular believe what they hear and they are not being intelligent how the media is presenting things to us. Too many Americans whose lives are golden are being brainwashed by media to think that life is horrible. The people who are angry and on edge day after day – you need something to break that. Sugar, overeating, heroin, sex, overspending – there become all these distractive behaviors in order to escape this lie that your life is shit. Most Americans life are not shit. Eighty percent of Americans live above the poverty level.

America has become a pleasure-driven society. If it tastes good, eat it. If it feels good, do it. Getting a “quick fix” increases dopamine, but reduces our serotonin and happiness and we end up sabotaging happiness by pursuing the next guilty pleasure.

All day every day we are bombarded with lies from the news media and it has to take a toll on the psyche and the spirit of Americans. This negativity is so hard and heavy. No wonder that people want to escape with drugs. My advice is just to be smart and realize how fortunate you are. And parents, quit coddling your kids, giving them every little thing they want, not ever thinking that one day that “want” could actually kill them.
